Eliot's penetrating portrayal of the interaction of ordinary people brought a new social realism to the novel, in which humor and tragedy co-exist, and fellow-feeling is the mainstay of human relationships. This is the first edition based on Eliot's final revision of the novel in 1861, using the definitive Clarendon text. Lawrence's experience of growing up in a coal-mining town, Sons and Lovers is a vivid account of the conflict between class, family and personal desires. This Penguin Classics edition is edited by Helen Baron and Carl Baron, with an introduction by Blake Morrison, author of When did you Last See your Father? The marriage of Gertrude and Walter Morel has become a battleground. Repelled by her uneducated and violent husband, delicate Gertrude devotes her life to her children, especially to her sons, William and Paul - determined they will not follow their father into working down the coal mines. But conflict is evitable when Paul seeks to escape his mother's suffocating grasp through relationships with women his own age. Acclaimed by Virginia Woolf as the first English woman to earn her living by the pen, Behn's achievements as a writer are now acknowledged less equivocally than in the seventeenth century. As well as Oroonoko, this volume contains five other works of fiction ranging from comedy and high melodrama to tragedy. The Fair Jilt, Memoirs of the Court of the King of Bantam, The History of the Nun, The Adventure of the Black Lady, and The Unfortunate Bride are complemented by a generous selection of her poetyr, ranging from public political verse to lyrics and witty conversation poems. It provides a record of their lives both now and in the past, and of their thoughts about the joyful and difficult issues they face. At the same time, it reflects the richness and challenges of their particular social, political and cultural context. The fictional worlds created in the anthology echo those documented in the non-fiction selections, and they speak to the lived experiences of women in Botswana and around the world: family tensions, sexual conflict, domestic abuse, poverty and single motherhood are explored alongside descriptions of sexual pleasure, intellectual engagement, expressions of joy and assertions of a political presence.

ISBN: 9789780805159

Cassava Republic, (2007) Revised and updated 2015

Soft Cover, 139 pages

A Nigerian narrator, living as a professional in New York for 15 years, returns home to (re)explore his home, perhaps in search of some part of himself or his past. In a series of mostly short chapters, he describes his interactions and experiences as he makes his way about Lagos, finding himself confronted by things he does not always expect despite the fact that this is his old home. Many reviewers think the narrator believes he has returned to a changed Nigeria, but actually it is probably the narrator that has changed the most. This book is labeled as “fiction”, but really reads more like a personal journal; one cannot help believing that the author is writing about himself.

Teju Cole’s writing is compact and easy to read, but still manages to completely paint each scene vividly. Although the potential for violence is mentioned several times throughout the chapters, the presence of full-on malevolence is never really felt. The most prominent theme is the constant experience of petty corruption that throws shade on almost every one-on-one contact between strangers. The official salary that most livelihoods pay is far too little for most Nigerians to survive on, and they must “derive a living from their affairs” (as described in an old story of Imperial Russia). As the narrator says: “The problem used to only be the leadership. But now, when you step out into the city, your oppressor is likely to be your fellow citizen, his ethics eroded by years of suffering and life at the cusp of desperation.”

The corruption starts in the very first chapter when the narrator visits the Nigerian consulate, a dingy place, to get the new Nigerian passport that will enable him to go home. The normal wait for a passport is four weeks, despite the official website insistence that normal turnaround time is only ONE week. This can be expedited by payment of an additional fee. Tellingly, the money order for “expediting” needs to be provided separately from the passport fee itself, and the receipt one receives includes only the passport fee. The expediting fee simply disappears into a pocket. Right in the office is a sign: “Help Us Fight Corruption.” It is not the last time he sees such a sign.

Electrical service is spotty, especially after dark, and those who can afford generators for backup have them. For the rest, the house frequently goes dark early in the evening and can stay that way until the next day. The narrator speaks of sleep disturbed each night due to the constant assault by the noise of diesel generators running outside. He also makes a trip to an Internet café, and talks about observing with sideways glances that others are busy tapping out their own versions of the email scams Nigeria has become infamous for. These are illegal under Nigerian law, but that doesn’t observably slow the perpetrators down. Getting caught and being required to pay a fine is just a cost of doing business; like so many other parts of the typical Nigerian's life, unexpected surcharges abound.

Based on what I’ve heard about Nigeria, I was not completely surprised by the general description of life in Lagos, but the writing is still quite interesting and added color and humanity to what was only my general conceptual impression. There, two very different men, Charles Darnay, an exiled French aristocrat, and Sydney Carton, a disreputable but brilliant English lawyer, become enmeshed through their love for Lucie Manette. From the tranquil lanes of London, they are all drawn against their will to the vengeful, bloodstained streets of Paris at the height of the Reign of Terror and soon fall under the lethal shadow of La Guillotine. This edition uses the text as it appeared in its first serial publication in 1859 to convey the full scope of Dickens's vision, and includes the original illustrations by H.K. Browne ('Phiz'). Forster's A Passage to India is edited by Oliver Stallybrass, with an introduction by Pankaj Mishra. When Adela Quested and her elderly companion Mrs Moore arrive in the Indian town of Chandrapore, they quickly feel trapped by its insular and prejudiced 'Anglo-Indian' community. Determined to escape the parochial English enclave and explore the 'real India', they seek the guidance of the charming and mercurial Dr Aziz, a cultivated Indian Muslim. But a mysterious incident occurs while they are exploring the Marabar caves with Aziz, and the well-respected doctor soon finds himself at the center of a scandal that rouses violent passions among both the British and their Indian subjects. A masterly portrait of a society in the grip of imperialism, A Passage to India compellingly depicts the fate of individuals caught between the great political and cultural conflicts of the modern world. In his introduction, Pankaj Mishra outlines Forster's complex engagement with Indian society and culture. This edition reproduces the Abinger text and notes, and also includes four of Forster's essays on India, a chronology and further reading. E. M. Forster (1879-1970) was a noted English author and critic and a member of the Bloomsbury group. His first novel, Where Angels Fear To Tread appeared in 1905. The Longest Journey appeared in 1907, followed by A Room With A View (1908), based partly on the material from extended holidays in Italy with his mother. Howards End (1910) was a story that centered on an English country house and dealt with the clash between two families, one interested in art and literature, the other only in business. Maurice was revised several times during his life, and finally published posthumously in 1971. In his journal he chronicles his daily battle to stay alive, as he conquers isolation, fashions shelter and clothes, enlists the help of a native islander who he names 'Friday', and fights off cannibals and mutineers. Written in an age of exploration and enterprise, it has been variously interpreted as an embodiment of British imperialist values, as a portrayal of 'natural man', or as a moral fable. But above all is a brilliant narrative, depicting Crusoe's transformation from terrified survivor to self-sufficient master of an island. This edition contains a full chronology of Defoe's life and times, explanatory notes, glossary and a critical introduction discussing Robinson Crusoe as a pioneering work of modern psychological realism.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. The memoir tells of Es'kia's childhood in Maupaneng, a small village outside Pietersburg, and Marabastad, a location in Pretoria. Here he showed academic promise. This resulted in a career as a teacher. After a number of years, though, he was barred from teaching because of his vocal opposition to the segregation and discrimination occurring in schools. Mphahlele then worked for Drum magazine in various capacities. The biography culminates in his exile from South Africa in 1957. Down Second Avenue is Mphahlele's personal account of his struggle for identity and dignity in the face of the growing discriminatory policies of the South African government. It is a compelling mix of humour and pathos. Es'ka Mphahlele was born in 1919. He qualified as a teacher at Adam's College in Natal, and from 1945-1952 taught at Orlando High School. He later joined the staff of Drum magazine. Meanwhile, he continued to study part-time and in 1956 was awarded his master's degree by the University of South Africa. In 1957 he left South Africa and would remain in exile until 1977. He lived in Nigeria, Paris and the USA and lectured at various universities as well as serving as director of Congress of Cultural Freedom in Paris. He received a Ph.D. at the University of Denver. After returning to South Africa, Mphahlele joined the University of the Witwatersrand as professor of African Literature. He retired in 1987.
