Lorena Rizzo highlights the ways in which photographic images cut across conventional institutional boundaries and complicates rigid distinctions between the private and the public, the political and the aesthetic, the colonial and the vernacular, and the subject and the object. Rizzo argues that rather than understanding photographs primarily as a means of preserving and recreating the past in the present, we can also value them for how they evoke at once the need for and the limits of historical reconstruction.

ISBN: 9780620452168

Big Sky Productions, 01 May 2010

Soft cover, 224 pages

aquarium-by-diane-cook-photographer-len-jenshel-photographer-todd-newberry-contributor-lawerence-weschler-contributor
Aquarium by Diane Cook (Photographer), Len Jenshel (Photographer), Todd Newberry (Contributor), Lawerence Weschler (Contributor)

ISBN: 9781931788212

Publisher ‏ : ‎ Aperture (October 15, 2003)

Hardcover ‏ : ‎ 120 pages

Why do a million people a year visit the tiny seacoast town of Newport, Oregon, whose population is only 8,400? How did the world react? From Roger Fenton to William Eggleston, from Henry Fox Talbot to Nick Knight, and from Henri Cartier-Bresson to Dorothea Lange, all the photographers featured in this book transgressed the boundaries of the camera with a skill and spirit that helped to develop their field into a highly evocative art form. His talent for engaging these themes through work that is as visually seductive as it is socially potent has brought him numerous awards and international residencies, and he has exhibited extensively both locally and abroad. It's a scene as old as Africa itself, yet its sudden, violent drama is always new. Dereck and Beverly Joubert know it well. For decades they've lived among lions, winning international acclaim for their unique photographs and pioneering documentaries, which record lions' previously unknown behavior such as nocturnal forays and a willingness to stalk their quarry through water. Of all their long experience, the Jouberts consider their two years with the lions of Duba the most exciting, important research they have done―here presented in fascinating text and 100 gripping images. Month after month, they battled floods, hardship, and danger to capture these spectacular shots of the relentless blood rivalry played out on the Okavanga Delta every day as three separate lion prides harry a huge herd of buffalo. These massive beasts are challenging prey; they fight back fiercely, aggressively seeking out the big cats and attacking them with deadly thrusts of their sharp, sweeping horns. The lions leap and dodge, but not always swiftly enough to escape―and so the ancient struggle goes on. This book was published in conjunction with the exhibition Scratches on the Face: Antiquity and Contemporaneity in South African Art, curated by Hayden Proud, Curator of Historical Paintings and Sculpture, Iziko Museums of Cape Town, South Africa. The marking of the 'face of the country' is so much a part of the human project in southern Africa. In pre-colonial times it took the form of ancient rock engravings; at another it articulated boundaries where people could or could not live because of their skin colour; it resulted in the deepest and most invasive scars in the earth ever made in the rapacious extraction of mineral wealth. In a metaphorical sense too, it has resulted in the marking and scarring of the psyche of its inhabitants. While in certain respects these aspects may be common to the faces of all countries everywhere, in South Africa they assume a powerful role in shaping human lives and culture.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0364/4047/3732/files/download_8108ff26-cd67-45e6-aefb-65bdc021e32d.jpg?v=1746693534
black-and-white-fifties-jurgen-schadebergs-south-africa-by-jurgen-schadeberg
Black and White Fifties: Jurgen Schadeberg's South Africa by Jurgen Schadeberg

ISBN: 9781919825717

Protea Boekhuis, 1 ‎ September 2012

Hardcover, 143 pages

During apartheid, Jurgen Schadeberg worked for the leading “black” publications of the time. The music and dance style of the 'Kaapse Klopse' (Cape Minstrels) was influenced by the North American minstrel troupes that visited the Cape in the late 1880s. Traditionally, the colourful and lively minstrels cavort through the city, singing and dancing to the sound of banjos, tubas, guitars, ghoema drums and whistles. The book features extraordinary contemporary photographs of this event by Gerald Hoberman, with an historical overview as well as unique photographs of District Six and Bo-Kaap, taken by him in 1969. The Avalon, the British and National cinemas entertained the locals and two photographic studios in Hanover Street recorded their social life. There were restaurants, grocery stores, butchers, tailor shops, drapers and a large fish market offering a wide selection of sea produce at very reasonable prices. When, in February 1966, the National Party government announced that District Six was to be razed to the ground in order to make space for a new 'white area', the poet James Matthews suggested to George Hallett and Clarence Coulson that they photograph the area before the bulldozers came in. As young students of photography they produced an intimate portrait of District Six under the guidance of Peter Clarke and Sakkie Misbach, who also provided Hallett with film for the project. In the 1960s Jackie Heyns ran a weekly column in the Golden City Post called 'Aunt Sammy's', which he illustrated with his own photographs. The columns - three of which are reproduced here - were based on the real Aunty Sammy, a shebeen owner living in District Six with her white husband and a rich source of local stories. Gavin Jantjes was a student at Michaelis Art School who lived in District Six with his parents; his pictures were taken during his wanderings in the area. Finally Wilfred Paulse, a free-lance photographer, covered the district shortly before its destruction, along with the bleak new developments on the Cape Flats where most of the inhabitants ended up against their will. District Six Revisited is set to become the definitive collection of photographs of this vibrant suburb, whose destruction became a symbol of the cruelty and inhumanity suffered by the people of this country. It attempts to reconstruct the spirit of the place from important historic photographs, some of which are published here for the first time.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0364/4047/3732/files/download_207f183f-374b-4682-97c2-f03e7c8538dd.jpg?v=1747231716
willem-strydom-at-the-rupert-museum-exhibition-catalogue
Willem Strydom at the Rupert Museum exhibition catalogue

From 28 September 2011 to 1 September 2012 the Rupert Museum in Stellenbosch stages an extensive selection from the work of well-known sculptor Willem Strydom

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0364/4047/3732/files/images_6d370f13-b44e-4fea-9a2c-a8896591c549.jpg?v=1747231917
sigmund-freud-his-life-in-pictures-and-words-by-ernst-freud-author
Sigmund Freud: His Life in Pictures and Words by Ernst Freud (Author)

Publisher ‏ : ‎ W W Norton & Co Inc, January 1, 1985

Paperback, 350 pages

To comprehend the Freudian revolution, it is necessary to understand the private as well as the public man. In fact, as this remarkable book reveals and relates, soldiers have taken photographs of war and its atrocities for more than 100 years. But their pictures are private, intended mainly for the soldiers themselves, as mementoes or as attempts to make sense of the chaos, brutality and boredom of war. They can be gruesome or sociable, shocking or mundane and they are seldom regarded as serious contributions to a visual culture of war, which since 1939 has been dominated by professional war photography. But with the 21st-century shift to simple digital photography, transmission by the internet available to all, and a new 'citizen journalism', soldiers' pictures are acquiring a new resonance."Private Pictures" traces this unacknowledged genre of photography from the origins of popular photography in the Boer War through to the present day; it discusses how the images have been used and it asks: what effect might the wider appreciation of soldiers' pictures have on the popular perception of war?

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0364/4047/3732/files/download_102b9d26-962e-4d9d-b06d-824925d90b2c.jpg?v=1749042416
nino-migliori-walls-by-eugenio-riccumini-marilena-pasquali-nino-migliori
Nino Migliori: Walls by Eugenio RiccÚmini, Marilena Pasquali, Nino Migliori

ISBN: 9788890130427

Damiani, March 2005

Hardcover, 152 pages

Layers of torn posters, chipped and peeling stucco and plaster, ghostly images formed by time and nature, childlike sketches by an unknown hand: these images and more can be found in this volume which focuses exclusively on walls. Whether on location for Vanity Fair, Elle, Rolling Stone, or Nike, Watts's camera captures a feeling of barely contained, youthful energy and sucks the raw essence out of his subjects. Watts has an uncanny ability to simultaneously put his subjects at ease and amp up their adrenaline. His working process has as much in common with the call-and-response patterns in hip-hop music as it does with the traditional conventions of photography. Designed by Ruth Ansel, this elegantly produced volume captures the romance and glamour of women in the 1950s and 1960s. A mix of fashion and portraiture, it includes intimate and striking portraits of Nico, Faye Dunaway, Edie Sedgwick, Sharon Tate, and Catherine Deneuve. Jerry Schatzberg’s moody snapshots of a more innocent and whimsical New York on the brink of the important societal changes of the sixties form a compellingly nostalgic portrait of a stylish moment. Images of jetsetters at an airport terminal, lovers embracing in Central Park, and a woman waltzing in the street in the Financial District portray a time as well as a style. A New York City native, Schatzberg documented the period with the insider’s sensibility of Woody Allen or Martin Scorsese, but with the high-fashion style of Irving Penn and Richard Avedon.
