ISBN: 9781870425223
Debt and Democracy is the third volume of papers presented at the 1989 Dar es Salaam conference ALTERNATIVE DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES FOR AFRICA. The conference was attended by leading academics from the continent who came together to address the deepening economic and political crisis on the continent.
Volume III contains papers on the international context of the crisis, the continent-wide effects and the ways in which specific countries have dealt with the debt problem. Issues covered include structural adjustment programmes imposed by the World Bank, the export of capital, privatization, the role of the multinationals and foreign investment regulation.
'. . . we must realize that even if all Africa's external debts are written off today and nothing else is done, the debt crisis will recur in a few years. African scholars and others must, therefore, mobilize themselves urgently to articulate and implement alternative programmes, strategies and policies for a transformation of all aspects of African economy and society - economic sectors, politics and democracy, social structures and values, women and meso politics.' - Adebayo Adedji United Nations Under-Secretary General and Executive Secretary of Economic Commission For Africa.
