This title explores three recent series of works from American artist Elyn Zimmerman. Elyn Zimmerman's drawings and photographs emerge from the nexus of the Light and Space movement that coalesced in Los Angeles in the 1970s. Her works on paper demonstrate her uncanny ability to capture the subtle play of shadow and light, to evoke a sense of suspended time, and to expose the artifice of image making without diminishing its power. This book presents three major groups of works produced since the year 2000: the paintings on paper in the Water Rhythms series, the photographs of the Topographies series, and the pastel and pigment drawings entitled Heaven's Breath. Blurring the borders between mediums, these recent works reveal Zimmerman's ongoing exploration of the perception of light, shadow and colour across bodies of water, cliffs and fields, the bark of trees, veins of frozen lava, and the threatening masses or gossamer threads of clouds.
