In The Last Wolf, a philosophy professor is unexpectedly commissioned to write the true story of the last wolf in Extremadura, Spain. He tells this miserable, haunting tale in a single, flowing sentence to a bored bartender in a bleak Berlin bar. 

In Herman, a skilled trapper is tasked with eradicating a forest’s last “noxious beasts.” Initially driven by zeal, Herman’s perspective shifts, and he begins to pursue entirely new, unexpected prey. In the novella’s second part, the same events are retold from the viewpoint of a group of hyper-sexualised aristocrats who interrupt their orgies to take part in Herman’s dark hunt.
