Young people have never been so aware of the negative impact of humans on the environment as they are now, or more receptive to information on the subject. For school teachers there has never been a better time to teach Environmental Education (EE).

In the first part of this textbook the contributors explain the key aspects of biodiversity, ecosystems and emerging environmental issues, making it easy for teachers to understand and convey the main concepts. They explore the development of the notion of education to support sustainable development, and its incorporation into the school curriculum in South Africa.

Part Two looks at environmental learning in the South African curriculum from a pedagogical perspective, environmental learning beyond the classroom, and the concept of the whole-school approach to Education for Sustainable Development, considering different teaching methods as well as learning methods.

Environmental Education: Principles and Guidelines for Teachers aims to:

• demystify environmental education
• provide ideas and practices for implementing EE into the formal school curriculum
• offer critical teaching and learning ideas that can facilitate meaningful environmental learning.

It will become the handbook for pre-service teachers, as well as for practising teachers, interested in ways of incorporating EE into the classroom at all levels.

About the Editor

Chris Reddy is a Professor in the Department of Curriculum Studies at the University of Stellenbosch. His teaching and research are in the fields of environmental education, teacher education and curriculum instruction and assessment.
