First edition set in two volumes. The books are uniformly bound in the publisher's original blue cloth, with gilt lettering on the cover and decoration to the spines and front boards. Illustrations including a portrait frontispiece, a colored coat of arms, two folding maps, and a total of 188 plates. The illustrations are diverse, comprising 12 monochrome plates, 11 color reproductions of engravings, 165 color reproductions of paintings, and 6 illustrations dispersed within the text.
Condition: The pages and interior plates are in mint and clean throughout. The text block exhibits some minor foxing (age-related spotting) primarily confined to the top edge (head) of the books, which does not affect the internal integrity or readability of the pages. The bindings remain tight and square.
