A number of factors combined to make the eighth edition necessary. Firstly, stocks of the previously printed edition were nearing exhaustion. Secondly, there have been some changes in the range of sections available in South Africa: the old RSJ shapes have now been reduced to one, and some of the hollow section and cold formed lipped section sizes have changed.
